ANZAC DAY 2015

I always have the best intentions to prepare some shows for ANZAC Day and I always leave it to the last minute.  You would have thought that I would have done so for the 100th Anniversary, but no, again I have nearly missed my deadline.

I have decided I would quickly record some of my Australian Army Public Relations discs and put them up here to give you an idea of some of the shows that they put together to entertain troops as well as educate Australians about our defence force.

The first example is War Correspondent ep87 - Coast Watchers.  This is a dramatisation telling the story of Coast Watchers in WWII.  These men lived behind enemy lines and reported positions and movements of the enemy.  It was a dangerous and courageous job.  Many Coast Watchers did not survive the war.

War Correspondent is 208 x 30 minute episodes.  It was released on 10" discs with act one on side A and act two on the other.

The next show is Army Showtime.  I don't know anything about this series and haven't started to research it, but it is interesting so I thought I would include it.  Terry McDermott is the compare and the show is a mixture of music and songs of the day with Australian artists and includes a story about an act of heroism or action with historical significance for the Australian Army.  This is a more recent series than I would normally research, but as I come from a long line of a family with Army and R.A.N. members, it is an area of interest to me.  Both my wife and myself are ex R.A.N. as was my Father.  His Uncle and cousins were Army as were members of my Mothers family.

Last one for now is Anne Now.  This is very recent in relation to where I normally research, approximately 1971-1974 apparently.  It stars Anne Hawker and her musician husband Johnny Hawker.  There is a guest star each episode and in this one it is Terry Norris, famous at the time of this recording as an actor on ABC Series Bellbird.  The television equivalent of Blue Hills. Anne Now is a variety show mixing Anne singing and telling jokes or comedy skits.

I am including this series here because I do want to research and document the series.  There seems to be very little information about it.  I understand that Anne and Johnny are still with us and I would love to hear from them.

A very mixed lot for sure, but some interesting tales, corny jokes and more.  I hope you find something of interest and perhaps learn something new.

White Coolies

Grace Gibson Productions have released a 2CD set of the 52 x 30 minute episode serialization of Sister Betty Jeffery's Book 'White Coolies'. http://gracegibsonradio.com/?product=white-coolies

I am very pleased.  I suggested this release to Reg James and Bruce Ferrier a few years ago.  I was very fortunate in having a copy of the series thanks to the niece of Betty Jeffery who asked me to convert Betty's cassette copy of the series to CD.  They were also missing the last episode.  The one that contained the audio where Betty Jeffrey got to meet the cast.  A request to the National Film & Sound Archives or Screensound as they were then, resulted in them supplying the final episode to me to give to the family.  This was one of the first complete series I got to hear and what a beauty.

For those of you who don't know the story.  White Coolies is the true story of Australian Army Nurses caught by the fall of Singapore in WWII and the three & a half years they spent as POW s under Japan.  There was a more recent television movie called 'Paradise Road' also based on the story.

Sister Betty Jeffery kept a diary on scraps of paper hidden in a cushion, a bottle and even up her jumper, at great risk to herself and others.  After the war she wrote the book and called it 'White Coolies'.  At the time the serial was broadcast in 1955, Betty Jeffrey commented that the book had enjoyed 6 reprints.  It certainly was popular when it was released in 1954.  Today you can find it in charity shops or 2nd hand book shops.  It is worth buying.

I enjoyed the book for many reasons.  I love Australian history.  I grew up with my Fathers 'war stories' and when I went through the school system, very little Australian history, apart from Captain Cook and Convicts, were a part of the curriculum.  You had to find it out for yourself from family and books.  I grew up with very little information about Women at war.  My Aunt was in the Army in Queensland and I knew about Nurses being involved, but very little actual information.  White Coolies told some of the story.  In recent years Canberra author, Ian W. Shaw wrote 'On Radji Beach' in honour of the Australian Nurses.  Another book on the subject I recommend reading.

White Coolies was also a game changer in Australian Radio Production.  The Producer, Fifi Banvard, Script Writer Gwen Friend and all the lead actors were women.  This was a first.  A big deal in Australia in 1955.  Yes there were some men involved in the production.  The announcer and the actors playing the Japanese guards were the only men involved.

This time of the year, thoughts turn to ANZAC Day on 25thApril.  For those of you not Australian, this is our Veterans Day.  On ANZAC Day we remember those who lost their lives defending this country.  We remember those involved in War and the sacrifices made.  Usually the stories evolve around men, so it is good for young girls to learn that it isn't all about men.  It is also about young women sacrificing homes, family, jobs and sometimes lives, for their country.  These things should not be forgotten.

The story of White Coolies needs to be read or listened to by every Australian.  It is a powerful and true story of these remarkable women.

Blog Update - April 2020
After reading the comment of Peter McGreevy, I contacted Bruce Ferrier of Grace Gibson Productions to request permission to include the first episode of the series in this blog.  Bruce's reply was immediate "Yes, of course you can, Ian. Get it up ASAP!  :-)"

Thank you Bruce.
A couple of things I would like to point out about the audio I have used here.

1. It is not even close to the quality of recording that Grace Gibson supplies.  Their sound is excellent, I know, because I bought a set of theirs myself.

2. This recording is special.  This has been taken from Sister Betty Jeffery's personal set of cassettes she was presented with at the end of the series.  They were safely kept by her Niece and I transferred them to CD for her and her brother many years ago.  But when I created an mp3 file from the wav file (which I have kept as an archive copy) it was just as a listening copy, so the bit rate is low.

The Layton Story

In early January I received the following inquiry:

"
I am so excited to to find 'The Layton Story' on your site under the Artransa listing for 1950. I have  been searching for recordings or transcripts of this radio  serial for years. My Nan started me on the search. She heard  this story in Sri Lanka and named my aunty Sheridan after  one of the characters. Is this it? Have you got any leads on  where I could obtain even a book of this story somewhere?

 In anticipation,
JL
 Sydney Australia.
"

I was able to get back to JL within a couple of days and told her that Craig Nugent had an episode and was happy to share it.

I haven't found any information that the story was based on a book, but I do know the following about the serial.

The scriptwriter was Kay Keavney with a cast that included Lyndall Barbour, John Saul, Alan White, Lynne Murphy, Frank Bennett, Allan Trevor, Rita Pauncefort, Jerold Wells, Moray Powell, Charles Macallum, John Cazabon, John Crane, Carol Lansbury with Lawrence H. Cecil Producer.

It was a Maquarie Production and commenced broadcast on 6th November 1950 on 2WL, 3AW, 5DN with Cadbury's as sponsor
and replacing Dick Barton Special Agent.

The story is about a legal family with the head of the household, John Layton a member of local firm Layton & Hanson, having a lifetime of legal practice behind him.  The family members also include Paul the reckless son, Josephine the irrepressible and Marion the so called maiden aunt who mothers the lot of them.   The descriptions I have read promise, joy, sorrow and adventure as we follow the story of the Layton Family.

With such a top line cast this must have been quite a serial.  I have finally worked out that there were 208 episodes.

Sorry JL no mention of your Aunt's namesake at this stage to confirm your family story.
Maybe some more episodes will turn up.

In the meantime, enjoy episode 115 with many thanks to collector Craig Nugent for the opportunity.
