Marie Evans - Argonauts Club - SELINUS 25

Picture
Born 31st August, 1942 towards the end of World War II. I was an only child living in the smallish country town of Wellington in NSW.

My parents owned and ran a small corner store (and a 'bookie business') which was open long hours.

Radio reception was not that great in those days - but of course had to be good for Race Days!

The Radio was my companion. The characters from 'Blue Hills at lunch time, the afternoon shows and the evening dramas became my friends and a large part of my world.

My memory is very hazy now-a-days, but it was lovely to hear my ship and number called out which made me feel part of the family.

Every afternoon after my homework was completed, I would settle next to the family radio which was in the lounge room and listen to the serials and stories on ABC. I loved the music from the Golden Boomerang, the Argonauts theme and the friendly voices of the characters who presented - they all had their own personalities and quickly became my 'ideal' family.

At night I listened on a small Bakelite value radio which belonged to my father. It had a bayonet style fitting which was plugged into my ceiling light socket.

The ABC is still my station of choice and just love Overnights with the wonderful Trevor Chappel.

To me, the most unusual thing about Marie's Certificates is that she received two Argonauts Club Certificates for the same ship and position at the oars.

Marie cannot recall how this came about, but thinks perhaps she thought she lost one and so they sent a replacement.  It makes sense.  But it is unusual and the first time I have seen this.

Thank you Marie for sharing your ARGO badge and your Certificates with the readers of this website.
