Radio Advertising
Here are some samples of Radio Advertising that will raise a smile and/or bring back memories.
There were some I just couldn't include, very politically incorrect and I could see the site copping abuse from minorities who would not listen with historical ears and see it as an example of how things were, not as they are now. I would understand their feelings as even as experienced a researcher as I am, I cringe sometimes at what I hear or read from pre 1960's.
I have long felt myself immune to television advertising. I find it mainly an interruption and far prefer the old days of including the ads as part of the shows as sponsors rather than leeches. But then I surprised myself. I am a fan of George and Gracie Burns. I enjoy listening to their old radio shows (U.S.) and watching their old television shows (also U.S.). I bought a set of George and Gracie DVDs from the U.S. and watched them over several weekends and their sponsor at the time was Carnation Milk. The ads were part of the show, one character or another would include the ad in conversation. I turned to my wife and told her how my Father loved Carnation Milk in his coffee and wondered aloud if Carnation was still around. My wife immediately said that her Father also liked Carnation Milk in his coffee and still used it. Next time we went shopping we bought a couple of tins and since that time, probably 8 years ago, we always keep a can or two in the cupboard and use it when we run out of milk or in recipes etc.
I thought that I should tell Carnation that their advertising budget of the 1950's was still bringing in business and wrote them an email telling the story. Sadly, I don't think they read or understood the message I was telling them. I received a form reply telling me to check their website for recipes but no other comment.
I will include other popular ads here when I get the chance to record them from disc.
